Voted the Sunday Times building of the Year in 1995, this exciting and innovative house is set on coastal rocky site in south-west England. It is rare to find such a unique coastal plot on which to build a new house but in this case a rumbling Victorian house was demolished to make way for an inspired contemporary design. A London-based architectural practice was commissioned by the owner to produce plans for a house that would work as a frequently visited, year-round holiday home.

Naturally, the focus is on the exceptional sea views, and the varying levels of the site area used to maximize these and provide a superb flow of movement between the living areas and bedrooms. The raised living room overlooks the dining area. During good weather an enormous wall of glass can be lowered hydraulically into the ground to open the house dramatically to steep garden beyond. The floors are of tile, stone or oak, all in natural colors, and marine blue feathers as a powerful accent color. There is a wonderful mix of materials, including an ancient-looking structural granite column, which supports the floor and fireplace above.

It’s beautiful! It makes me feel like I’m really in another century. Was it hard to get the furniture? Thanks for sharing this. If you have a chance, come and visit me back.
