Rather than tackle the restoration all at once, it is an evolving process, the allotted annual works undertaken by local people and in the traditional manner, but it is no casual holiday project. The paints are natural locally available pigments, which are light and vibrant and typical of the Mediterranean, and the original concrete floors have been coloured with diluted oil paint and given a wax polish. It is the sort of house that can absorb an exotic mix of items for numerous countries such as Uzbekistan, India and Egypt, fusing colour and texture; things brought purely for pleasure, over many years, look right here. The East is close at the hand and the garden and exterior living spaces reflect that influence. The sound of water trickling into pools creates a wonderfully calm atmosphere and there are numerous sunny or shady areas in which to relax.
