If plenty of light and a good location are today’s most desirable elements when looking for a property, particularly in a city, then this penthouse in London’s Barkeley square has it all. Set on the seventh and eighth floors of and elegant period building, it was stripped back to brickwork and painstakingly rebuilt using the finest materials and latest technology. From the black-and-white marble entrance-hall, double doors lead to the drawing-room on the left and the kitchen and dining-room on the right. A set of electrically operated glass doors close off the kitchen when required. Full-height glazed doors open on a hardwood-decked terrace, where the square’s two-hundred-year-old plane trees almost touch the railings.
The decoration focuses not on pattern or color but on the various textures of walnut flooring, stainless steel in the kitchen, fine marbles for the bathrooms, mirrors, and the tactile surfaces of suede, cashmere, leather and linen for upholstery. Much of the furniture and lighting was custom-made for the three-bedroom apartment, the owner preferring simple shapes and strong lines, and favoring highly grained hardwoods, carbonized finishes and glass table-tops. There is a sense of the luxury hotel here, and in fact certain hotels provided the impetus for the design brief.
