Not every London architect would feel happy to find him or herself in a Victorial country house, but this former city resident relishes the space and the garden. His work takes him back to London frequently but his wife, a horsewoman, and their two children are delighted to live in such a fine period house. He was especially pleased that little had been done to the place, allowing a complete and cohesive refurbishment. Although the interior are pure white and the finishes contemporary, the house has a gentle edge to it and perhaps more texture than is usual when architects design for themselves.

Because there is plenty of space, the compromises of town architecture do not apply in the country. Rooms can have defined purposes: bathrooms are usually converted from bedrooms, kitchen have separate pantries or sculleries, and utility areas do not have to be squeezed into kitchens. All the windows feature walnut-colored slatted blinds and all the ground-floor rooms are finished in limestone. The good-quality classic materials give the house a timelessness; color can come and go, furniture may be old or new, fashions may be change but this is a house with excellent ‘bones’
