Instead of trying to make his vertical space look larger by using the common device of an all-white scheme, the interior design director of a top UK fabric and design company took another approach in this south-west London apartment. A developer had bought an old school, divided the spaces into units of various sizes and sold them on as empty shells. From the entrance-hall, the staircase, with one wall covered in floral paper, leads to a mezzanine level. On the left is a wall of bookcases, and further on an ingenious bathroom created by using screens so that one can see partially beyond the square washbasin and bath into the bedroom.
Solid walls would have meant small box-like rooms and too many doors. The library is visible from the ground floor through a wire balustrade stretched across the open space. Solid blocks of colour define the spaces, anchored by a dark wall in the dining area, which is furnished with an octagonal antique table and chrome chairs. The kitchen is a smooth strip of timber and slate, which runs unobtrusively along one wall in the living-room. This is a beautifully designed space, full of panache.
