There are entire streets in London where so little has changed that one marvels at the sense of having stepped back in time. Newly painted, unusually colored front doors are sometimes the only clue that the nineteenth century has well and truly gone, and that owners today live in a quite different way from their Victorian or Georgian predecessor. Completely undaunted by the elaborate Victorian Interior of this house, the new owners bought it on the strength of its wonderful windows and a layout of rooms that worked particular well for their needs.

Much original detailing survived, and the designer-owner was convinced that her neutral, contemporary style would complement the good marble fireplaces, moldings, staircase and shutters. Furnished with mix of French and Italian antiques, plus modern sofas and chairs, the house is imbued with an understated luxury. African artefact’s, contemporary minimalist works of art and a limited colour pallet create a calm but interesting backdrop to family life. Oak and stone floors are softened by a collection of bold rugs from Oriental Heritage in London, anchoring the neutral linens and woods on a rich stripy ground.

What a great way to liven that cottage up. I wouldn’t have touched the furniture since so much was done to the walls and floor though.
