That rarefied part of Provence known as the ‘Golden Triangle’ (between Avignon, Arles, Aix-en-Provence) is filled with exceptionally beautifull homes, many with large, superbly designed gardens, of which this is a perfect example. Their owners come from Paris, Northern Europe, the United States and beyond.
Rarely are farmhouses, or ‘mas; as they are known, in good enough condition to satisfy the desires of the new owners. Specialist firms in the region, with intimate knowledge of restoration techniques, now bring back to life many of the semi-ruined mas and bastides.
Usually built of local limestone, they were originally the houses and barns that formed the hub of local farming communities, and the best restoration programme make use of traditional methods and materials.Attached barns become drawing-rooms, tractor sheds make oranges, and often a new staircase has to be built to reach the upper floors. So skillful is much of the work that it barely possible to tell what is original and what is new.
Windows glass appears old, floor and wall tiles are reclaimed and carefully selected for patina, fireplace surrounds are bought second-hand from dealers, and walls are finished in traditional colours. It is a style that is much copied throughout to the world but is never quite as good as the real thing.
