It is said that a good building becomes outstanding when it achieves a marriage of the functional and the artistic within a human scale. Many people believe that the classicism is the apogee of architectural endeavor; indeed, the Classical revival, the emulation of Greek and Roman art and architecture, has been almost continuous since the eighth and ninth centuries. A well-known British architect and exponent of the Classical orders designed and built this country house on the established principles of noble simplicity. Although small in scale, it appears larger than it really is, Partly because of the perfect proportions but also because the architect designed a good deal of furniture, thus providing a rare continuity of scale and style.
This was common practice in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when an architect’s commission would include all the key pieces of furniture in the public rooms of a house. It is a light home, owing to the large oval or rectangular windows and doors that lead to the terraces and the inclusion of a glass dome set above the staircase. There is a slightly Empire feel to the interior and yet the house functions as a thoroughly contemporary structure.?
