This apartment spans the raised ground floor of two elegant houses in London. It is entered through a square all, devoid of any decoration of furniture. This taupe-colored space is lit both artificially and by diffused light from the room on either side. The door straight ahead leads to the designer-owner’s large bedroom; to the right is the pure white Siematic kitchen, while to the left a further door leads to the dining room and drawin room, which are linked by arches either side of chimnet-breast.

Although the apartment was superb in its former incarnation, this reworking of spaces, along with their pared-down simplicity, reflects more accurately the owner’s belief in the home being a complete sanctuary, a place where everything is orderly, calm, and comfortable. Her love of symetry apparent everywhere. Square, boxy shapes predominate but nothing is heavy or too solid. This lightness of touch is achieved by never crowding a room with furniture, but rather choosing appropriate upholstered pieces in neutral tones that contrast with dark-wood tables and stools and the casual arrangements of black and white photographs.

I love the juxtaposition of the neutral, creamy colors and the jagged motif of the furniture with its tall spired bedposts and pointed bookshelves. It’s an interesting style and one that is much different from the modern one we try to cultivate in our boston luxury apartments at Fenway. The cluttered wall of pictures speaks to controlled chaos which blends very well with the rest of the furniture.
