The Nils Finne which is Seattle-based architect is recently finished a contemporary renovation of a farmhouse in The Fall City, Washington. Besides it, Nils Finne Architect also designed the FOSS pendant light which is hanged above the dining table.

The renovation of the Fall City is beginning in a farmhouse which is placed on a hillside overlooking the Snoqualmie River Valley; it is about 30 miles to the east of the Seattle. The walls between the kitchen which is located o the main floor are removed, and a 25 feet long addition to the kitchen provide a continuous glass ribbon around the limestone kitchen counter. Then the result of the interior is similar to a fire look-out tower in the national forest. A custom island table is created using reclaimed elm planks and blackened steel base which is adding to the open feeling, with inlaid limestone around the sink area. In the existing dining table are hanging over the sensuous custom blown-glass light fixtures. The completed kitchen-dining space is serene, light-filled and it is dominated by the sweeping view of the Snoqualmie Valley.

The master bedroom is being the focused second part of the project renovation, which is similar to the design approach in the kitchen, the new addition is creates a continuous glass wall which is completed with the wonderful views of the valley. The blackened steel-frame vanity mirrors are custom-designed and it is hanging suspended in front of the window wall. The LED lighting has been integrated into the steel frames. In front of the floor-to-ceiling glass is perched, next to a curvilinear custom bench in Sapele wood and the steel.

The Limestone counter and floor is provide the material continuity in the space. The sustainable design practice is including the extensive use of the natural light, it’s to reduce the electrical demand, low VOC paints, LED lighting, reclaimed elm planks at the kitchen island sustainably harvested hardwoods, and natural stone counters. The new exterior walls of this building is using 2×8 construction achieved 40% greater insulation value than the standard wall construction.

Besides the architect is renovated the building, the architect also designed the FOSS pendant light. The fixture measures of the pendant light is about 10” high and it s made from hand-blown glass, stainless cable and the brushes nickel lamp holder. The flow of water is evoked by the fixture’s free form shape, and the fixture’s name, FOSS, is mean the Norwegian word for waterfall. The MR-16 or the LED lamp is located above the glass shade in order to evenly illuminate the hand-blown glass. The fixture is takes the more standard pendant configuration (lamp inside shade) and turns it inside out.
