The Michael Hill Clubhouse which is based in Arrowtown, New Zealand, is completed designed by the Patterson Associates. It is the client’s desire that the architect based on their brief to design a place which is reinforced the game of golf and it is operating primarily as a “private box”. The capacity is to transform into a gateway headquarters for large competitive events. The landscape and the cultural heritage which is depicted in Maori mythology as a people borne of the land and the sky are define the identity of the New Zealander. This is the cultural view of the science of geology and the tectonic uplift.

This clubhouse project is hunkered into the earth with the less than a third of its volume which is penetrating above the ground plane. Besides it is seeks to integrate and intensify the experience of golf’s primary relationship with the landscape. A skewed form is created by an integral truss system and it is supports a green roof which is planted in the native tussock. On the site itself is almost entirely contained by the systems of energy, water, waste and the climate control. The clubhouse is seeks to integrate with the panoramic vista, rather than form a node on it. An even greater environmental contribution is the building’s strategy in the sustaining the qualities of the alpine landscape.

Then to define the volumes within the building and the building within the landscape, a skewed trapezoid geometry is operates as the three-dimensional spatial building blocks. This pattern is repeated across all the scale and it is weaving the building into a three-dimensional matrix. Inside this clubhouse building, a glass-reinforced concrete ceiling with integrated heating and the acoustic design is hovers above the white dimpled texture aluminum forms. While the main bar and dining space is an intimate light-filled grandstand overlooking the 18th green. The service areas, workshops and the cart storage are buried further back into the ground. By a reflecting pond, a large private gym is flanked, where can exercise before being massaged in one of the two bespoke color therapy rooms which making up the spa. Physical.

The design creates a model of its environment, both cultural and physical. In doing so the building seeks to become a pattern within the environment, amplifying and reinforcing the relationships between player, game, and land.
